At Grabschützer Lake, nature is reclaiming the former open-cast mining area in its own way. This has created a varied landscape that provides habitat for numerous protected animal and plant species and is part of the European bird protection area (SPA). The core zone is inaccessible to avoid disturbances, but the circular trail accessible via 3 main entrances offers plenty of opportunities over 7 km for personal observations and enjoyment. Telescopes are also available at some points. In addition, the nature trail informs visitors at 18 stations about landscape history, geology, ecology, as well as flora and fauna.

Directions
The circular route starts from the parking lot behind the barrier to the right and leads left around Grabschützer Lake. At the first fork, hikers keep left and follow the path between Zwochauer Lake and Grabschützer Lake. After a while, the path reaches a straight section which offers a great view between Werbeliner Lake and Grabschützer Lake. Follow the sign for the Grabschützer Lake nature trail and turn left. Here there are more interesting panels on the mining area. A few steps later, the path passes a covered picnic bench and a small viewpoint, Mottenhügel. The path continues to the left until the starting point is reached on the right side.
