What is still to come?
Only drive as far as the Neuseenland? That's not enough for the people of Leipzig. They want to set sail even further. As part of the "Water City Leipzig" project, work is once again underway to expand the port of Lindenau and connect it to the European waterway network. The next goal is the connection to the Elster-Saale Canal. Work is to be carried out on the 75 m long connection in the future. When it is finished, it will be possible to travel from Leipzig to Hamburg. Well then, full speed ahead!
What is it?
A port without ships? It couldn't stay that way. In July 2012, the city council decided to connect the Karl Heine Canal with the port of Lindenau. From now on, things should move forward. Construction work for the breakthrough to the port began in September. Wasser Marsch was the name of the game in January 2015: the 665-metre-long connection between the Karl Heine Canal and Lindenau Harbour was flooded. Three weeks later, it was done and the connection was completely filled with water. On July 2, 2015, the time had finally come! The connection was ceremoniously opened. Since then, you can sail on a boat along the Karl Heine Canal through Leipzig to the Leipziger Neuseenland. What happened?
The first cut of the spade for the construction of the Lindenau port was made in May 1938. In the spring of 1943, the Second World War meant that work had to be halted again. Large parts of the port had already been completed. But one crucial detail was missing. The connections to the Elster-Saale Canal and the Karl-Heine Canal had not been completed. As a result, the port was not accessible by water and could not be used for shipping. Only the already completed storage and warehouse buildings of the port could actually be used. Since the early 1990s, however, the buildings on the almost 40-hectare site have fallen into disrepair.<br
