Auenkirche Markkleeberg

The Auenkirche was built in the course of the first settlements in the area of today's Markkleeberg in the 11th/12th century. The church of Kleeberg, as the Auenkirche is also known, was built as a simple rectangular structure. The church was re-consecrated in 1627 after it had burned to the ground in a fire in 1612. 
The number of people in the church district grew steadily as a result of incorporations. To make room for more people, the Auenkirche was rebuilt in 1744 and has hardly changed its external appearance since then, despite minor renovation work from time to time. The area around the church was heavily fought over during the Battle of Nations in 1813. Fortunately, the church did not suffer any major damage.
