Church of St. Nikolai in Kitzen Hohenlohe

The church in Hohenlohe was founded around 1150. In addition to Kitzen, almost all of today's districts of the former parish and a number of villages that no longer exist today belonged to the parish of Hohenlohe. This was the largest parish of Merseburg Abbey and it was largely independent in terms of ecclesiastical and secular administration. In 1235, the parish lost its independence. 

In 1543, Bishop Sigismund allowed the Gospel to be preached in the monastery. The church, which was burnt down in 1631, was rebuilt during the Thirty Years' War. In 1786, the congregation donated a wooden altar, which is still preserved today. For some years now, a support association has been working to preserve the church.

The abandoned Romanesque cruciform church was acquired by a support association in 2010 and has been systematically restored since then in accordance with conservation principles and guidelines. The exterior restoration has been completed; the interior of the church is currently being renovated.
