Town Church of St. Laurentius Pegau

The first mention of the original building dates back to the middle of the 12th century. A town fire destroyed large parts of the church in 1382. The reconstruction as a late Gothic three-aisled hall church was completed in 1463. The church received a new pulpit in 1616 and a new altar in 1621. Epitaphs and panel paintings from different eras also document the magnificent furnishings of the church dedicated to St. Lawrence. In the vault of the tower is a tombstone from around 1235/40 for Wiprecht von Groitzsch, the founder of Pegau Monastery. The Urban Kreutzbach organ from 1855 stands on the two-storey west gallery.

Urban Kreutzbach (1796 - 1868), a pupil of Carl Gottlob Häcker, founded his own workshop in Borna in 1828. His sons and grandson continued to run the company until 1903. Over 200 organs were built during this period. The organ built by Urban Kreutzbach in 1851 for the town church of St. Laurentius in Pegau is his largest work with 35 stops. When the church was renovated in 1934, the organ was given a free-pipe façade, which visually bears no further resemblance to the organ façades of Kreutzbach. The mechanical action system was retained during this redesign. In 2000, the organ was repaired by the Bochmann company from Kohren-Sahlis.
