City gate with gatehouse
Discover the impressive town gate with attached gatehouse, an important part of the former town fortifications. Together with the Nikolaikirche on the Kirchberg, the parish building and the powder tower, it is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Built around 1200 in medieval times, the city gate has been a listed building for many years.
Living history: In the Middle Ages, the city gates were constantly guarded and closed at night or in case of danger. In the past, customs duties were also levied here for the import of goods into the city and for passing through, which explains the presence of a later customs house in front of the city gate. The chutes for the portcullis are still clearly visible on the outside of the gate.
An eventful past: In 1824, an apartment for the bailiff and two prison cells were built into the gatehouse. One cell is still well preserved and can be visited by appointment, along with a small exhibition on the town gate.
