Short facts

Rochlitz is one of the oldest cities in Saxony and boasts a mighty castle, a historic city centre and interesting churches.

Rochlitz is not only home to the Rochlitz Hill with its unmistakable porphyry rock, it is also one of the oldest cities in Saxony and boasts a mighty castle, a historic city centre and interesting churches.

With a history of over 1000 years, the city of Rochlitz is one of the oldest cities in Saxony. The most striking point of Rochlitz is the Rochlitzer Hill - with 353 meters above sea level the highest elevation between the Leipzig lowland bay and the foothills of the Erzgebirge. It has been one of the most popular excursion destinations in the region for decades. With its bright red porphyry, whose importance and history can be explored on the porphyry nature trail, it attracts numerous visitors time and again.

But also Rochlitz Castle with its defiant skirts - the two towers, in whose dungeon many poor drunkards but also political opponents used to be confined - and the nearby St. Petri Church are always worth a visit. Not to forget the city of Rochlitz itself, which boasts the late Gothic St. Kunigundenkirche, a historic city centre, the market square - which was once the largest in Europe - and a town hall. The beautifully restored townhouses and the renovated alleys and squares invite you to linger and discover numerous porphyry details.

The city centre of Rochlitz is a protected monument. The market fountain in front of the town hall has the form of a death lamp. It was created in 1929 by Professor Georg Wrba from Dresden and was intended as a memorial to those killed in the First World War. Rochlitz's oldest baroque house, the bathhouse from 1707, is located outside the former city wall. The town's most important buildings are displayed on porphyry boards which include interesting information; these were installed by the Rochlitz Historical Society. In addition to the market fountain, the fountains at the Topfmarkt, Clemens-Pfau-Platz and Mühlplatz are also worth seeing.
