Court Chapel Hubertusburg Castle Wermsdorf

The Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus (formerly the court chapel) is worth a visit, as it is the only room with the original furnishings in the entire castle. At the request of the then chaplain, it was spared from the plundering of "Hubertusburg" after the Seven Years' War by the troops of "Old Fritz" (in retaliation for the devastation of "Charlottenburg" in Berlin - the Prussian king's favorite palace - by Saxon Uhlan regiments).
The palace chapel occupies the entire left half of the main wing of the palace with a height of three storeys. Arched arcades in the interior support the galleries. They close off the nave in a semicircle with a niche for the altar. The gallery above this small apse provides space for the organ, and the one opposite takes up the entire width of the interior of the royal box.
The person entering is surprised by the white and red marbled walls with their richly gilded decorative ornamentation. It is not marble, but artificial stucco marble (plaster, lime, sand). The art of production was adopted from Italy. Italian artists and plasterers worked here.
The former court chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of hunters, St. Hubertus. Augustus III was a passionate hunter. The approximately 400 m² ceiling painting by Johann Baptist Grone (1682-1748) refers to the patron saint of the chapel. The painting depicts the legend of St. Hubert. Dressed as a hunter, Hubertus kneels in a forest landscape in front of a stag standing on a rock, carrying a radiant cross between its antlers. Reddish-colored clouds cover the evening sky, in which angelic figures can be seen. One of the angels carries a mitre and another a crozier, the signs of episcopal dignity.
