Doberschütz

Short facts

The municipality of Doberschütz between Eilenburg and Torgau is considered the gateway to Düben Heath.

Doberschütz was already mentioned in older writings as the "Gate to Düben Heath".

The village of Doberschütz itself is located on the B 87 between the cities of Eilenburg and Torgau on the edge of the Düben Heath. It is nestled in a wooded area consisting mainly of coniferous trees, but to an increasing extent oak, beech and birch trees can also be found in the forest. The forests around Doberschütz are a popular excursion destination for residents of the greater Leipzig area. From Doberschütz you can access the nature conservation project "Presseler Heidewald und Moorgebiet" ("Pressl heath forest and moorland"). Beavers and cranes have already resettled this area.

Doberschütz was first mentioned in a document in 1314. The history of Battaune can be traced back about 1000 years. At the same time, the other communities belonging to Doberschütz were established. Our landscape is shaped by the Schwarzbach creek, whose origin is the "Kuhgrund" (cow ground) in Sprotta.

Zu den Sights in unserer Gemeinde zählt u. a. The Witrowberg in Paschwitz is one of the many attractions in our municipality. The Witrow church was built in the now-defunct village of Witrow in the 10th/11th century. It was situated in the middle of the old graveyard on an artificial hill and, because of its location, it was called the high church of Witrow. The Friedemann tower windmill is a special jewel. It has been in existence since 1883 and was still in operation until 1998. It is the only wind-powered tower mill in our region. A visit to the village church of Battaune is also worthwhile. It features a late-Gothic carved altar and a very valuable mural painting that was recently discovered during renovation work.

In the district of Winkelmühle, which belongs to Wöllnau, visitors will find what is today the smallest public forest cemetery in Europe.

A sign-posted 4 km long nature trail is also in place.

Curious? Then visit our beautiful community, where even more surprises await you.
