Friedenspark (Apothecary Garden and Fragrance and Touch Garden)

The green area on Linnéstraße in the south of the city was opened as the new Johannisfriedhof in 1846, as the Alte Johannisfriedhof had reached its capacity limits and could not be expanded. Due to severe damage from the Second World War, it was closed for burials at the end of 1950 and completely closed to the public 20 years later. The former function of today's park can still be guessed from a remnant of the enclosing wall and a few preserved wall sections.

Under the new name Friedenspark (Peace Park), the site was reopened in 1983 as a recreational area with various leisure facilities. The two themed gardens are a special feature: The Apothecary Garden of Leipzig University showcases 300 medicinal, healing and poisonous plants, while the Fragrance and Touch Garden was created in 2007 for the integration of blind and visually impaired people.

Friedenspark also has a lot to offer families. In addition to the popular playground, there are table tennis tables, sports equipment, a basketball court, barbecue area and the toboggan hill, which is very popular in winter.
