Grimma District Museum

Museum/art collection
Exhibition on the history of the town of Grimma, crafts and industrialization, history of the Saxon Princely and Provincial School

The district museum is located in the former first girls' school in the town of Grimma. In the Middle Ages, the grounds of the museum belonged to the Augustinian churchyard. The former monastery church of the Augustinian hermits next to the museum still dominates the townscape today.

The establishment of a museum in the town of Grimma resulted from an antiquities exhibition in the riding hall of the Hussar Regiment in the summer of 1900. Citizens interested in history had called for this presentation. They subsequently joined together to form the History and Antiquities Society. In 1901, the Grimma town council gave the newly founded history and antiquities association several rooms for permanent use and to set up an exhibition on the town's history. The collection grew rapidly thanks to rich donations and lively excavation activities by members of the association.

The holdings range from prehistory and early history to modern times. The collections focus on the historical development of the town, the various trades, the history of the St. Augustin Princely and Provincial School and the history of the 2nd Hussar Regiment No. 19 in Grimma.

Other treasures include the national graphics collection, the extensive library with around 10,000 books and writings as well as archival records, a military collection, textiles, glassware, porcelain and pewter objects of great artistic significance.
