The former "Kaufhalle am Markt" is considered to be one of the last examples of the Warenmesse's arcade building. The Handwerkerpassage was dedicated in 1989.

The late classicist building directly at the market square dates from the middle of the 19th century. Today it is one of the last examples of the Warenmesse's arcade building. The former "Kaufhalle am Markt" once comprised 41 salesrooms located along the arcade to Klostergasse.

After extensive renovation work, the newly designated Handwerkerpassage was inaugurated, and the unique window cleaner fountain was also installed. During a further renovation of the front building in 1997 and 1998, the entrances to Barfußgäßchen and the present Marktgalerie were built.
