The municipality of Kriebstein is located in the southeast of the Leipzig region. The place is known for the impressive Kriebstein Castle, which is considered the most beautiful knight's castle in Saxony. The former fortification from the 14th century stands proudly on a rugged rocky outcrop. At its foot, the Zschopau flows through the narrow and rocky Zschopau Valley. Rooms such as the Gothic hall, the treasure vault, the knight's hall and the chapel can be visited. The imposing outdoor area is also impressive.
Another attraction is about 20 minutes' walk away: the Kriebstein Dam with its nine-kilometer-long reservoir. After it was built in the 1920s, the damming of the water created a completely new landscape that still attracts a large number of visitors to the region today. Various hiking routes along the popular fishing waters and the Zschopau Valley to Kriebstein Castle offer fascinating views and unforgettable nature experiences. An art hiking trail also leads around the dam. It is made special by around 50 wooden works of art, created as part of the Central Saxon Cultural Summer since 2001 at the annual "Art on the Water" symposium. Exploring the region from the water is also extremely attractive - on one of the five passenger ships or in a paddle boat. You can also get active in the climbing forest with its 85 climbing elements on seven different courses.
Even more culture: Saxony's only lake stage is located at the Kriebstein Dam. From spring to autumn, a wide variety of performances by the Central Saxon Theater and other events are offered. The stage measures 250 square meters and can accommodate up to 850 people in the audience. The repertoire includes operetta, musical and cabaret performances as well as concerts. Breathtaking shows with dance, music, fire and light as well as medieval productions round off the program.
