Ladegast-Eule organ in the Nikolaikirche Leipzig
The organ in the Nikolaikirche was built in 1862 by Friedrich Ladegast and is one of the most important instruments of the German Romantic period. Originally equipped with 84 stops, it shaped the cultivation of Bach and Romantic organ music in Leipzig for decades. Technical modifications later impaired its sound, but the magnificent case and large parts of the pipework were preserved.
In 2004, the organ was extensively restored by the Eule company and its sound returned to its original Ladegast state. Mechanical slider chests and carefully reconstructed stops restored its original sound.
For its 20th anniversary in 2024, the instrument was given three new timbres, including the Vox Populi and the Macan and Panamera stops donated by a Leipzig sports car manufacturer.
Today, the Ladegast-Eule organ has 106 stops and 6,880 pipes - making it the largest organ in Saxony, which regularly enriches church services and concerts.
