Paulinum - Aula and St. Pauli University Church
Throughout the university's almost 600-year history, students in particular have always played a major role in the city's musical life. They took part in the Collegia musica of Telemann and Bach, played in coffee houses, at the opera or in Leipzig churches and joined together to form choirs. For example, the Universitätssängerschaft St. Pauli, which was founded in 1822 and led by Max Reger in 1907/08.
Many musical events were closely linked to the university church until the church was demolished in 1968 at the instigation of the SED leadership. Today, the Paulinum, which resembles a church from the outside, combines the university auditorium and a prayer room on the same site. The new building is intended to commemorate the former St. Pauli University Church.
