The statue commemorates the musician Richard Wagner, who was born in Leipzig in 1813 and is regarded as the most influential composer of the high romantic era.

The Richard Wagner Monument is located on the green at the Schwanenteich north of Leipzig Opera and commemorates the musician, who was born in Leipzig in 1813. He is considered the most influential composer of high romanticism.

Wagner was 17 years old when he first played his Overture in B flat major at the Comödienhaus in Leipzig during Christmas in 1830. The monument, inaugurated in January 1983, features a bronze bust of Wagner. This is a replica of the bust that the Leipzig sculptor Max Klinger (1857 - 1920) created in 1905 for the unfinished Wagner monument. You can visit the permanent exhibition "The Young Richard Wagner from 1813 to 1834" at the Old St. Nicholas School.
