St. Mary's Cathedral Wurzen

The cathedral was consecrated in 1114 in honor of the Virgin Mary. The east choir was extended in 1260. Following the introduction of the Reformation, Protestant services were held in the cathedral from 1542. During this time, the interior was redesigned. Galleries were installed on the north and south sides in 1555 and 1593, but these were later removed. In 1817, the church was redesigned again in the neo-Gothic style. The current impression is characterized by the expressionist bronze work by Georg Wrba, 1931/32. On the west side of the nave is the Jehmlich organ from 1931/32.

The oldest predecessor instrument in St. Mary's can be traced back to 1503. Further instruments of varying sizes are documented until 1931/32, when Jehmlich Bros. of Dresden built a new organ with electropneumatic controls and a mobile console in connection with the historicizing redesign of the interior. III/44 The free pipe façade corresponds entirely to the concept of the new interior design. 1998 - 2001/2007 a general overhaul was carried out by the company Christian Reinhold, Bernsdorf. The specification was partly changed and extended. The organ currently has 48 stops on three manuals and 7 transmissions/drawers.
