The Wurzener Land cycle route is a beautiful and worth-seeing circular cycle route through the northern part of the National Geopark Porphyrland.

The start and end point of this interesting route is the town of Wurzen with its numerous sights. The town skyline with the mill towers of the former Krietschwerke, the cathedral and palace ensemble, and the town church arouses curiosity for more. We take the time to explore the town centre – renaissance and baroque buildings as well as newer buildings with rich Art Nouveau facades together create the town’s atmosphere.

The over 1,050-year history has left many traces. The historic fabric of one of Saxony's oldest towns with the cathedral “St. Marien” and castle, the former residence of the Meissen bishops, can be explored on a walk along the “Ringelnatz Path”. Dedicated to the artist Joachim Ringelnatz, this leads to the most important sights of the extensively restored old town. The most beautiful Renaissance building is undoubtedly the museum with its exhibition on the rich art and cultural history of the town and the Ringelnatz collection. After a tour of the town, we find peace and tranquility in the parks and the town forest, which, passing quarries, forms a connection to the excursion area of the “Hohburger Berge”. On newly created and restored paths, you can cycle here comfortably. A variety of excursion destinations and recreational opportunities as well as the magnificent landscape along the course of the Mulde River with a unique, largely natural and protected animal and plant world make the Wurzener Land very appealing for tourists and full of experiences.

Along the route of our circular bike tour through the northern part of the Geopark there are some interesting points such as the Canitz Park and geological landmarks such as the quarries around Böhlitz, which clearly show the regional importance of rock mining. Two visitor centres of the Porphyrland Geopark lie on the way. The geoportal “Time – Change – Stone” in the Röcknitz manor house and the Geoportal Museum Steinarbeiterhaus in Hohburg offer interesting information about the surroundings in their exhibitions. Signs of the ice ages can be explored at the Spielberg in Böhlitz and at the Kleiner Berg near Hohburg.

As a cyclist you can reach the town on many routes. There are several long-distance cycle routes crossing Wurzen, such as the Mulde cycle route and the Leipzig-Elbe cycle route.

Directions

From Wurzen station we ride along Bahnhofstraße via Wenceslaigasse into the centre. The over 1000-year-old cathedral town invites you to visit with various places to eat and drink.

Then continue north along the city park towards Nischwitz (4.5 km).

From the cycle path, we turn left towards the town centre. Here we can take a detour to the restored church and the playground. Not far from the church is also one of the most beautiful and magnificent rococo castles in Saxony.

We continue north towards Canitz (7.0 km).

There we find an attractive resting place, the Canitz nature and history park. Here you can experience nature in harmony with Saxony's history and discover the daily life of our ancestors from the Stone Age to the Slavic period. Depending on the season, the themed gardens (including the fragrance, herb, organic and rose gardens) are always inviting. In the centre of the Canitz park, a museum (settlement history, nature conservation, drinking water extraction) can be visited.

We follow the cycle path further north and then turn right onto "Kollauer Straße" in Thallwitz (11.0 km).

Here we have the opportunity to explore the garden of the Thallwitz Renaissance castle. In its immediate vicinity is a bicycle rest area with numerous information about the place and its surroundings.

After the church, we turn left, then right onto the street "Am Teich". Via the street "Im Ilsental" we reach Böhlitz (15.5 km).

In the village of the stoneworker industry, there is a themed resting place in the village centre. Furthermore, Böhlitz has an outdoor pool and a quarry, which invite you to swim.

We continue to follow "Straße des Friedens" on the cycle path in a northeasterly direction to Röcknitz (18.5 km).

Here a sign points to the geoportal "Zeit-Wandel-Stein" in the Röcknitz manor house, an adjacent geo-experience garden and the volcano playground "Fred Feuerstein".

The cycle path runs south on "Steinbergstraße". At the exit of the village, we turn half left onto a sandy muddy farm road.

This leads us directly into the Hohburger Berge.

(Those who want to avoid the now steep ascent of up to over 15% on partly gravel surface and the equally rapid descent turn left after about 2 km – towards Zwochau and after another 1.5 km right onto Wildschützweg and reach Hohburg.)

We pass Gaudlitzberg (219 m) on the left, Burzelberg (221 m) on the right and reach Hohburg (24.0 km) via "Kirschberg" street.

In Hohburg, the museum "Steinarbeiterhaus" grants us insights into the life of the stone workers. In its outdoor area you can visit, among other things, a stone crushing plant, a steam engine and a field railway. In the town there are places to eat and stay overnight. In summer, a detour to Kaolinsee is worthwhile.

We now leave Hohburg in a northeasterly direction via Thomas-Münzer-Straße. There the path joins the Dahlener-Heide cycle route. We are in Thammenhain (29.0 km).

Via "Lindenstraße" and "Am Wildpark" we reach Thammenhain castle. A stroll in the idyllic castle park is worthwhile before we leave Thammenhain via the street "Am Wildpark" towards Voigtshain. In Falkenhain (32.0 km) we turn left into "Karl-Haupt-Straße" and then right into "Zur Siedlung" street. In "Karl-Marx-Straße" we pass the church and the community administration. We leave Falkenhain via “Doktorweg” and reach Frauwalde (36.5 km).

Here a beautiful resting and dining opportunity is offered at Mühlteich. There are overnight accommodation options in the town.

We now continue via "Erlenweg" in a southwesterly direction, pass Heyda and reach Dornreichenbach (43.0 km).

Here an animal enclosure next to Dornreichenbach Castle invites you to linger. The tour continues through the landscape park along the street "An der Froschweide" and the railway path to Mark Schönstädt (44.5 km). A detour to the idyllic forest pool is worthwhile.

Further on via "Bahnhofstraße", past the stop “Mark Schönstädt”. Via "Meltewitzer Straße" we reach Kühren (48.0 km). Now we turn left into "Schulstraße", cross the main street and have the possibility of resting at the "Elefantenbrunnen". The journey continues into "Mühlgasse", shortly before leaving the town we turn right onto a farm road. After a further 3 km we reach Mühlbach (52.0 km).

Here are the buildings of Germany's oldest preserved sugar factory. A bicycle rest area with information about the factory and a playground invites you to linger.

Along "Am Haselbruch" street it goes along Mühlteich. We reach Burkartshain. From "Diesterwegstraße" we turn right onto "Fremdiswalder Straße" and keep right towards Pyrna (56.0 km).

A detour to the 12-metre-high round tower, donated in 1911 by the Burkartshain estate owner, is a must. Rebuilt in 1986, the small observation tower offers a wonderful view over the Wurzener Land – to Wurzen, to Trebsen, to the Wermsdorf forest and on clear days up to the Oschatz Collm. At the foot of the tower is a generously laid out bicycle rest area.

We continue on the street “S 47” and reach the “Pyrnaer Straße” and the “Mulde cycle route”. We follow it towards Wurzen to Dehnitz (65.5 km).

We ride via “Dorfstraße” to the widely visible landmark, the 19-metre-high Bismarck tower built in 1908, and the Wachtelberg.

On Sundays and public holidays you can enjoy the view of the Wurzener Land during opening hours. Inside the Bismarck tower there is a photo exhibition that informs visitors about the construction of the tower and the protected plant life of the surroundings. As early as 1911, the entire Wachtelberg was placed under nature protection and thus belongs to the oldest protected areas in Germany.

The town of Dehnitz offers not only attractive places to eat but also overnight accommodation. The tour continues along the path "Am Wachtelberg" past the new housing block. Here we turn left onto a narrow cycle/walking path that leads us across the Lache directly to a ferry. Here we cross the Mulde on the ferry and are now in Schmölén (66.0 km).

Coming from "Fährstraße", we turn right onto "Am Schwarzwasser" street and pass the St. Ursula chapel on the right as well as the Schmölén manor house (an original water castle). After about 300 m, "Am Schwarzwasser" street divides. Before the small grass island, we keep left and follow the street to the federal road "B 107". After crossing the "B 107", we follow "Am Berg" street. At the second junction we turn left into "Altenhainer Straße". This street leads us into the Planitz forest, the second large forest area of the Wurzener Land. Here we turn right according to the signs towards the forester's lodge "Waidmannsheil" (67.5 km).

In the cozy barbecue hut or on the sunny terrace, there is a wonderful place to linger.

The path leads us further through the forest to "Leulitzer Straße". We turn right into it and reach Bennewitz after about 2 km (70.0 km).

In the town centre we can relax at the fountain in front of the community administration. Bennewitz also offers a number of places to eat and stay overnight.

The journey continues on the cycle path 50 m on the left next to the community administration to "Leipziger Straße". We follow this to Deuben. Via "Püchauer Straße", we reach Grubnitz. Here the path leads through the Mulde foreland over the Mulde and the canal bridge with a wonderful view of the Wurzen silhouette, shaped by the mill, castle and cathedral towers. On the western edge of Wurzen we ride back to Wurzen on cycle and farm roads following the cycle path signs. We also pass the Gurasee and the "Dreibrücken" outdoor pool. After 77.0 km, we reach Wurzen station.
