Bennewitz is one of the oldest settlements in the Muldenaue. Around 1,200 years ago, the Sorbic-Wend Bono, or Bonislaw, the Elder settled here with his entire family and household, after Germanic settlers had left their homesteads during the time of mass migrations. Visitors can find the region's oldest fortified church in the centre of town. The church and its tower were built in the style of the Late Romantic period (around the 13th century). The old village constellation around the church is characteristic of the Sorbic "Rundling". Bennewitz was first referenced in writing in 1335. It has been an independent ethical community since 1974, and today includes the districts Schmölen, Pausitz, Bach, Rothersdorf, Neuweissenborn, Deuben, Grubnitz, Nepperwitz, Altenbach, Leulitz and Zeititz.
One of the attractions in the main village in the Townhall, which was 1994 and is not only the seat of the mayor and the municipal administration, but also houses a library, a hairdresser's salon and a flower shop. The large and well-designed town hall square is a popular meeting place for young and old alike.
Convenient public transport links make Bennewitz and the surrounding area an attractive destination for both locals and visitors.
Large areas of the territory belong to the "Mittlere Mulde" nature conservation reserve. The little-known but charming Planitzwald, with its rare plant and animal species, stretches to the southwest. Cyclists and hikers can explore the idyllic routes along the Mulde and through the Planitzwald. The Forsthof Waidmannsheil guesthouse makes for an ideal resting place in the middle of the forest. On good weather days, it's generous patio offers a reprieve from everyday life, and children can find plenty of entertainment on the spacious playground or the nature trail.
