Theme trail with insights into the formation of pyroxene granite porphyry and a unique nature

From the parking lot below the Dehnitz country inn, the path leads past a former quarry toward the Mühlbachtal valley. This is where the pyroxene granite porphyry, typical of the area, was mined. Along the path is a dry-stone wall made of the same rock. Once in the valley, the path follows the "Golden Valley" nature trail.

Along the trail, there are numerous information panels about the flora and fauna of the Wachtelberg-Mühlbachtal nature reserve. From the valley, the trail leads back through the village of Dehnitz into the Mittlere Mulde landscape conservation area along the Aue and Dehnitzer Lache streams.

On the way toward Wachtelberg, the trail passes the former Dehnitz windmill and continues through the Wachstelberg-Mühlbachtal nature reserve. Here, you'll find the Bismarck Tower. From March to April, the common pasqueflower, a species threatened with extinction in Saxony, blooms nearby. The view from the tower offers a panoramic view of the former basin of the Wurzen Caldera and the nearby quarry, from which the site's typical pyroxene granite porphyry was mined until the 19th century. The rock provides insight into the area's volcanic embarrassment. From the quarry, the trail leads back to the parking lot.

Directions

The Wachtelberg Georoute in Dehnitz starts opposite the Dehnitz country inn, where you will find parking.

Turn left onto Dorfstraße and follow the signs for the "Golden Valley" nature trail. The circular trail around the former "Golden Valley" outdoor swimming pool is accompanied by information panels.

Continue straight ahead along Alte Dorfstraße (Old Village Street) and take the path to the Mulde. At the first intersection, turn left toward the playground. After the bridge, follow Am Mühlbach on the left, keeping right at both possible junctions. After the ferry house, the path leads back to the village. At Am Wachtelberg, turn right for a few meters until the Osterblumenweg (Easter Flower Trail) leads up Wachtelberg on the left. Please be careful: you are entering an important nature reserve! Please stay on the designated paths at all times. From the plateau, follow the narrow path along the quarry back to Am Wachtelberg. After a few meters to the left, you will reach the starting point.
