Bismarck Tower on the Wachtelberg Wurzen

The 20-metre-high observation tower on the 148.5-metre-high Wachtelberg in the "Wachtelberg-Mühlbachtal" nature reserve was built in 1908-1909 and offers a view of up to 40 kilometers across the Mulde valley on clear days. Inside the tower, an exhibition provides information about the 100-year history of the tower and the flora of the "Mittlere Mulde" nature reserve. Guided tours of the area are offered by the GeoRangers of the Geopark Porphyry Land.

The Wachtelberg is the highest elevation in the south of Wurzen (Dehnitz district) and is considered the oldest natural monument in Germany. Particularly noteworthy is the rare "Osterblume" (real cowflower), the occurrence of which here is the easternmost in Central Europe and the only one in Saxony. The area has been protected since 1911, allowing the plant to spread rapidly over the decades. The Wachtelberg combines nature, landscape and cultural protection and is an important regional natural monument.
