Crochet house
The Krochhaus on Leipzig's Augustusplatz was built from 1927 to 1928 by German Bestelmeyer for the Kroch bank.
The architect's proposal to make more effective use of the narrow plot with eleven storeys initially sparked protests. As a result, a mock-up was initially used to ensure that the new building height could be acclimatized before the other storeys of the high-rise were added.
The design of the limestone-clad reinforced concrete building is based on the clock tower on St. Mark's Square in Venice. The cladding and the structural parts of the skyscraper are made of shell limestone. The depicted bellmen, father and son, chime Leipzig's hour. Below the figures is the Latin inscription "Omnia vincit labor" (Work conquers all). The clock on the 10th floor, made by Bernhard Zachariä, is flanked by two depictions of lions in relief. The phases of the moon can also be read on this clock.
The exhibition center of the University of Leipzig is located in the former counter hall of the Kroch bank. The room is the most important Art Deco interior in Leipzig. The terracotta Neptune fountain with its gilded figure of the god of the sea is particularly impressive.
