Delitzsch
Delitzsch still has a fortification system from the beginning of the 15th century, consisting of a town wall, town towers, kennels, moat and ramparts.
The town is located in the northern part of the Leipzig region. The historic town center with its small alleys and narrow streets clearly shows the settlement structure from the 15th century. It is surrounded by an imposing 1.4 km long city wall with a water-filled moat, which was part of the former medieval fortifications. This was redesigned in the 19th century and since then has been an inviting place to stroll around the picturesque old town with its shady promenade and avenue of lime trees. In addition to the two town towers, the spires of the medieval town church of St. Peter and Paul and the tower of the baroque castle dominate the townscape. The baroque castle is one of the oldest castles in Saxony and has a lovingly landscaped garden in the French style. The interior of the castle rooms is also impressive. From the tower you have a beautiful view over Delitzsch and the surrounding area. The town clerk's house and the mayor's house with their magnificent entrance portals are also impressive.
An insider tip on the tour is the German Cooperative Museum at Kreuzgasse 10, as the idea of cooperatives was developed by the town's most famous son, Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, and is on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The town park, the rose garden and the nearby zoo invite you to stroll and relax. The lakes around Delitzsch can easily be explored by bike.
