Memorial Church Schönefeld
Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck married on September 12, 1840 in the church in Schönefeld. There were two reasons for the wedding north of the city walls of Leipzig. Firstly, Schumann had a passion for music, had attended school together and came from Zwickau with the then pastor Karl August Wildenhahn (1805 - 1868). On the other hand, Clara's father Friedrich Wieck (1785 - 1873) did not want to give his daughter away, especially not to Robert Schumann. The conflict was settled in court. Friedrich Wieck lost the case.
Clara and Robert sought the distance for their wedding. The Schönefeld church was badly destroyed in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. It took the congregation seven years to rebuild it. Its simple interior in the classicist style has largely been preserved to this day and, like the memory of the famous wedding ceremony, is lovingly maintained by the congregation.
