St. Michael's Church

The Michaeliskirche in Leipzig is a Protestant church building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is located on the North Square and, with its striking location, forms the northern end of the main north-south axis of Leipzig's city center. Its broad façade can be seen from afar when looking down Nordstraße. Another striking feature is the monumental, broad tower, which at 70 meters is one of the tallest church towers in the city.

It was built in 1901 as the main church in the northern suburbs of Leipzig, as there was a rapid increase in population at the time. Consecrated in 1904, together with the Friedenskirche in Leipzig-Gohlis, it now belongs to the Michaelis-Friedens-Kirchgemeinde and is used by the latter for church services, meetings and concerts. The interior seats 790 people. During the summer months, the church also hosts changing exhibitions on various themes.

As an important urban monument, it combines Renaissance, neo-Gothic, neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau elements. Having survived the destruction of the war almost unscathed, the church now stands out clearly from other church buildings of the era thanks to its unique design.
