Mining Technology Park in Leipzig's New Lakeland
As incredible as it may seem, the beautiful bathing lakes of Leipzig's New Lakeland owe their existence to the region's mining past. Now that the old open-cast mining pits have been flooded and converted into local recreational oases, there are few reminders of the mining chapter in Leipzig's history. However, if you look into the distance at Lake Markkleeberg or Lake Störmthal, you will discover the huge pieces of open-cast mining equipment that are part of the Mining Technology Park as industrial relics. The park can be explored on your own with the help of information boards or audio guides or on a guided tour with former employees of the Espenhain open-cast mine. The processes of open-cast lignite mining are vividly demonstrated in the Mining Technology Park - and the gigantic machines alone are worth a visit.
The Mining Technology Park is one of three stations in West Saxony on the Route of Industrial Heritage Saxony. The highlights of the exhibition are two large machines, the 1,300-tonne bucket wheel excavator 1547 and the 2,400-tonne spreader 1115. Built by the TAKRAF company in the 1980s, they are unique artifacts of the art of engineering. Specially developed texts and audio guides suitable for children inform young visitors about geology and technology, but also remind them of the miners and the numerous "lost places" that had to make way for lignite. The Tertiary adventure playground informs visitors of all ages about the formation of lignite.
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 11 a.m. (or by appointment), former miners from the Espenhain open-cast mine give knowledgeable and entertaining tours of the site and the exhibitions.

- By public transport: From Leipzig main station, take streetcar line 15 to the Leipzig, Probstheida stop. From the Leipzig, Probstheida stop, take bus no. 141 to the Auenhain (Markkleeberg), Seepark stop. From there it is approx. 2 km to the park on the signposted footpath and cycle path.
By car: Coming from Leipzig via the B2/ A72 to the Böhlen exit and then follow the signs for "Zentraldeponie".
Coming from Göttingen or Dresden, take the A38 to the Leipzig Süd exit. Take the A72 towards Chemnitz as far as the "Böhlen" exit and follow the signs for "Zentraldeponie".
Coming from Chemnitz, take the A72 to the Zwenkau/Böhlen exit and then follow the signs for "Zentraldeponie".
The correct route to the Bergbau-Technik-Park from all directions is via a short section of the K7934 road onto the main road near Gaschwitz/ Großdeuben. Follow the signs for "Zentraldeponie" and cross the A72 to reach the destination road "Am Westufer". From here, follow the signs for "Bergbau-Technik-Park". Social Media
