St. Moritz Church Taucha

The Taucha town church, which is named after Magdeburg's patron saint Mauritius (German: Moritz) due to Taucha's former affiliation with the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, has only existed in its current form since 1774, when it was consecrated after its predecessor (a stone church from the 12th/13th century) was completely destroyed in the great town fire of 1768.
The baroque church with its hall building, one of the largest of the 18th century in western Saxony, has a west tower that dominates the Taucha townscape. Its bells, consisting of three steel bells, date back to 1926 and replace the bells removed in 1917, two of which were melted down for war purposes. The Leipzig City Council donated an organ to the church in 1795. The church has been renovated several times over the centuries, with the roof being renewed and, thanks to many donations, a new organ installed in 1996.
