St. Nicolai Church Döbeln
The church was first mentioned in 1293 and was rebuilt as an early Gothic basilica after a major fire in 1333, with the original west portal from 1370 still preserved. The church was given its current late Gothic character in 1479. The mighty, 60-metre-high tower was built after fires in 1629 and 1733. The most important piece of equipment is the 12 m high 6-winged late Gothic carved altar from 1515/16, which was made by the so-called "Master of the Döbeln High Altar" (whose name is not known). Also noteworthy are the pulpit from 1599, the relief-decorated sandstone ashlar from 1603 and a communion relief from 1500. The Eule organ is also one of the most important in Saxony. A Luther memorial has stood in front of the church since 1902.
Döbeln is a stop on the Saxon Luther Trail.
