In 2004, the newly created hiking trail from Hohendorf to Neuen Geyersberg was planted with the trees of the year. For 15 years, a nationwide German committee has been determining a "Tree of the Year." Each year there are corresponding nomination criteria. Except for the fir tree, which does not grow in the region, all designated trees were planted along this path or were already present.

The "Tree of the Year 2005" was the horse chestnut, which also found its place on the path. Each tree is described by an information board, on which the distribution areas, wood properties, wood usage, and also the mythology of the trees are indicated.

At the foot of the Neuen Geyersberg (171 m above sea level) with a magnificent panoramic view, three larger information boards have been set up dealing with topics such as the kingdom of plants, open-cast mining reclamation, and the world of animals. Many seating areas offer hikers and cyclists a frequently used resting opportunity.

The geological educational trail continuing south of Hohendorf shows 186 erratic boulders recovered from the nearby open-cast mine, predominantly of Scandinavian origin (granites, diorites, and gneisses, with partly visible glacial striations as a special feature), some equipped with identification boards. Well-designed educational panels provide information on "In the Kingdom of Plants," "The World of Animals," and "Open-Cast Mine Reclamation." A memorial stone commemorates the village of Schleenhain resettled in 1964/65.
