Borna

Historical site
The large district town of Borna in Leipzig's Neuseenland region has a population of around 20,000 and offers visitors a unique blend of culture, nature and history.

Among the historical buildings worth mentioning are the Kunigundenkirche, a Romanesque pillar basilica from the 12th century, the town church of St. Marien, the Reichstor, the last remaining of the original four town gates, and the famous Emmauskirche, a Romanesque fortified church from the 13th century. In 2007, it was relocated from Heuersdorf, which had been sacrificed to lignite mining, to Borna, around 12 km away, a technical and logistical masterpiece.

The Volksplatz, originally built in 1934 as a Thingplatz and more recently used as an open-air stage, hosts numerous events such as concerts, festivals and summer cinema. It also has the largest fixed movie screen in Europe. In addition to the regular events in the town cultural center, the media library, the town museum and the Wyhra Story Court, there are numerous other highlights in the event calendar such as the City Beach, event shopping, the town festival and the Christmas market.

Lake Bockwitz, Lake Haubitz, Lake Hainer, Lake Harth and several reservoirs are located in the immediate vicinity of Borna. The natural Lake Bockwitz stands out, most of which is located in the nature reserve of the same name, is home to numerous protected species, has a nature trail and attracts nature lovers, hikers and cyclists in particular.

This year, Borna is celebrating its 775th anniversary with numerous event highlights and a festival weekend with a parade from 27 to 30 August 2026. Program at www.borna.de/775
