Monastery church St. Augustin Grimma

Church
Augustinian monks began to build a monastery on the banks of the Mulde in 1287, but nothing remains of it apart from the church. It was partially torn away by a flood as early as 1315 The unfavorable location near the river has repeatedly led to damage up to the present century (most recently in June 2013), although the urban terrain in this area has been heaped up by around two meters over the centuries. After a fire in 1430, the monastery church was rebuilt and re-consecrated on 8 June 1435.
The impressive building has walls almost one and a half meters thick and is more than 54 meters long, with an average width of over twelve meters and a height of 19 meters.
The monastery church was used by the Order of Augustinian Hermits until the Reformation around 1541, then until 1937 as the church of the adjacent Prince's and Provincial School of Grimma, then until 1975 - due to a usage contract with the city of Grimma as the owner of the building - occasionally as a Protestant-Lutheran place of worship. After vacancy, closure by the building police and extensive collapse of the roof in 1989, the roof was renewed after the collapse of the GDR and the conversion was made possible.
