Trages slagheap observation tower
The observation tower on the Trageser Hochhalde rises 33 meters into the sky. It was opened in 2002 after a construction period of just three months. The construction was made possible by funding from the Free State of Saxony for lignite remediation and the dedicated cooperation of the umbrella association Mitteldeutsche Straße der Braunkohle e.V., the municipality of Espenhain, the LMBV, Steinbau Ehrenfriedersdorf and other regional stakeholders.
The tower offers an unobstructed 360-degree view of the Leipzig lowland bay and the recultivated mining landscape around Rötha. An information board on the upper platform points out elevations and objects in the surrounding area.

The Trages spoil tip was created around 60 years ago from the excavated material of the Espenhain open-cast mine. At 70 m high and 2 km long, it is located between Espenhain, Mölbis, Trages and Thierbach. It is characterized by erosion gullies on the western side and ecologically valuable biotopes in the tipping forest. A 10 km long circular hiking trail across the Hochhalde offers information boards, geocaching points and views as far as the Erzgebirge ridge - ideal for nature and hiking enthusiasts.

By car:
Take the A72 to the Espenhain/Kitzscher exit, then take the S48 "Am Heiligen Holz" towards Thierbach. Alternatively: Take the B2/B95 towards Rötha/Espenhain, then follow the local roads towards Mölbis or Halde Trages.
By public transport:
S-Bahn: Lines S5, S5X or S6 to Böhlen (near Leipzig)
Bus: Line 144 to the bus stop Thierbach (near Borna), Goldener Born
Parking facilities:
Parking lot opposite the orangery (Mölbiser Hauptstraße 34)

Signposted paths lead from the parking lot or bus stop to the Trages spoil tip. An approximately 8 km long circular trail runs through the "landscape after the coal" including information stations and the observation tower on the slag heap.
