The route out of the town of Torgau runs along the Elbe floodplains with an impressive panorama over the town and then on hiking and forest trails through the Torgau Ratsforst along small lakes to Schildau.

The route starts in one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany, which is one of the origins of the Reformation. This was the political centre of the Reformation in the 16th century. After a visit to Hartenfels Castle and the town church of St. Mary, where the remains of Katharina Luther lie (she died in Torgau in 1552), the hiker sets off through the Elbe plains, where a fantastic panoramic view of the town of Torgau awaits him once again. The route leads along small lakes and over wonderfully beautiful hiking and forest paths, along quiet village roads. After passing the Schildau church, the route leads to neighbouring Sitzenroda, a passage that Luther liked to use because it was off the main route. Luther, who was under the imperial ban, was in great danger in the ducal territory and therefore used paths that were remote from the town centre. In Schildau, hikers can visit the Gneisenau Memorial, the Schildbürger Museum and the Schildbürger Fountain, as well as an observation tower on the Schildberg.

Directions

In Torgau you start at Hartenfels Castle. From there you follow the marked route along the Elbe, past the harbor castle, heading south to the village of Loßwig. There you turn right to the village of Pflückuff, which you leave again heading west on the Sachsenweg. At the fork in the road you continue on the Schwertweg through the Torgau Ratsforst. On hiking and forest paths, along small lakes, you reach Schildau through the village of Staupitz. The last stretch of the route between Kurzwalde and Schildau runs along a quiet village road. However, since cars are allowed to drive 80 km/h there, it is best to walk next to the left edge of the road so that you can be seen as early as possible by approaching cars.
