On the occasion of the Bach Festival, several events will be held in honour of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

On 11 March 1829, the Berlin Singakademie under the direction of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy from Leipzig performed the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. Since then, Mendelssohn has been regarded as the "re-discoverer" of Bach's masterpiece. The Bachfest, therefore, includes several events dedicated to Mendelssohn at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig or the Mendelssohn Haus.
