Pegau - a small town with heart and history

The historic town of Pegau, in the south-west of the Leipzig region, lies in the middle of a newly created lake district. The medieval old town, which almost fell victim to brown coal mining in the 1980s, is very tranquil and has been lovingly renovated. The shady squares and picturesque alleyways in the old town around the church and town hall are idyllic places to linger. Worth seeing are the Renaissance town hall with the town museum and the Türmerstube, the Napoleonhaus, now the town library, the Volkshaus and the 'Alte Wache' on the Elstermühlgraben. In the town church of St. Laurentius there is the precious tomb slab of Margrave Wiprecht II (1050 - 22.05.1124) in the tower vault as well as a baroque high altar and a pulpit with canopy in the choir. The Erbs brickworks, a technical monument, and the unique Elstertrebniz iron mill, a cultural monument, are also worth a visit. Wiederau Castle is one of the most important examples of baroque architecture in Saxony. Inside, illusionistic ceiling and wall paintings from the Italian school bear witness to the opulence of the Baroque era. None other than Johann Sebastian Bach immortalized this picturesque place in 1737 with his cantata "Angenehmes Wiederau, freue dich in deinen Auen".

Pegau is the gateway to the Neuseenland: water hikers and paddle enthusiasts can row from the  boat landing stage at Schützenplatz, near the König-Albert-Hain, along the  Wasserkurs 1A along the Weiße Elster through the Neuseenland to the city harbours in Leipzig. Lake Zwenkau, the largest in the Neuseenland region, is 10 km away, and Lake Cospuden, Lake Markleeberg and Lake Störmthal with the island of Vineta are also close by. In addition to relaxing on the beach, the lakes offer further opportunities for water sports and passenger boat trips.
