After the two branches of the Mulde river confluence, the United Mulde crosses the Leipzig lowlands, which are mainly characterized by small forests and extensive fields. In contrast to this is Grimma with its historical buildings from various eras, including the Pöppelmann Bridge, which was reconstructed in 2012. Shortly before Wurzen, we have the choice of taking the ferry to the other bank or choosing the bridge.
After Wurzen, the route no longer runs directly along the Mulde, but the path makes up for this with views of endless meadows. In the adjacent bird sanctuaries, especially in spring and summer, you can discover over 30 native bird species, some of which are very rare, such as the white stork or the kingfisher, before you reach Eilenburg with its worth-seeing mill island.
After Eilenburg, we mainly pass through fairytale floodplain landscapes, which are constantly changing. The Düben Heath with its diverse flora and fauna, including the spa town of Bad Düben, is the destination of this stage. Here you can relax wonderfully in the worthwhile spa center.
After Bad Düben, the path leads along the Mulde to the Great Goitzschesee and the associated Pouch peninsula. To the right of the peninsula is the Mulde reservoir. In earlier times, brown coal was mined here before the resulting basin was flooded and now designated as a nature reserve. The path continues over the dam to the Saxony-Anhalt town of Bitterfeld-Wolfen.
Let's go on the last stage of the United Mulde. Almost thirty kilometers of flat ground lie ahead of us along the "Lower Mulde" until we pass the Bauhaus city of Dessau-Roßlau, which has UNESCO World Heritage status, and shortly afterwards reach the hunting bridge over the Mulde, which is also the end point of the tour.
