Discover romantic river landscapes with unique flora and fauna and cultural and historical treasures along the Mulde Valley hiking trail.

On the Mulde Valley hiking trail along the Freiberger and Vereinigte Mulde rivers, you will be fascinated by the extraordinary nature, which presents itself in a constant alternation of narrowness and expanse, silence and life. Typical alluvial landscapes and wetlands with a rich variety of flora and fauna have been preserved here. On the other hand, numerous cultural and historical sights in the nearby towns and villages characterize the landscape. Old town centers, mighty castles, magnificent palaces and a variety of museums provide an insight into the impressive history of Saxony's cultural landscape.

While the Freiberger Mulde flows through a hilly area with rugged cliffs until it joins its sister, the Zwickauer Mulde, the river becomes wider, more powerful, in places extensive and leisurely from the point of confluence. In spring and summer, lush meadows with an almost inexhaustible array of flowers resemble a park landscape created by nature. Consequently, hikes from Roßwein to Grimma are rather strenuous, from Trebsen to Bad Düben more relaxed.

Directions

To hike along the Muldental hiking trail, it is easy to travel from Leipzig to Döbeln by train. To get to the starting point in Roßwein, first travel from Leipzig to Chemnitz and then continue by bus to Roßwein. From Döbeln, the hiking trail leads partly directly along the Freiberger Mulde to Buch Monastery. You hike through the Maylust and Eichberg forest. The village of Leisnig is reached after approx. 20 km. From Leisnig, Podelwitz, south of the Thümmlitzwald forest, is reached after around 10 km. Here it is worth visiting the Podelwitz moated castle. At Sermuth, where the Freiberger Mulde and Zwickauer Mulde rivers merge to form the Vereinigte Mulde, the Mulde Valley hiking trail can now be continued south towards Colditz. Here you now walk along the Zwickauer Mulde for approx. 6 km until you reach Colditz. The imposing Colditz Castle is already in view. Here you can spend the night. The next day, hike back north from Colditz, past Sermuth and along the Vereinigte Mulde. Once you arrive in Höfgen, south of Grimma, you can visit the watermill, the ship mill and the Nibschen monastery. After around 60 km of the total route (with a stop in Colditz), you reach the town of Grimma. Further north, the route leads past Trebsen/Mulde, through the Planitzwald forest to Wurzen. In Wurzen, as in Grimma, there are also overnight accommodation options. From Wurzen, the route leads mostly away from the Mulde to Thallwitz and on to Eilenburg. An overnight stop can also be made in Eilenburg until the last of your strength is mobilized for the hike to Bad Düben. Once you arrive in Bad Düben, you can take the bus back to Leipzig.
