Covering more than 600 hectares, the Oberholz is not only a remnant of unspoiled nature between fields, former open-cast mining areas and settlements, but also a refuge for plants and animals. It is a popular excursion destination at any time of year.

The nature trail in Oberholz has information boards to the left and right of the path, providing lots of interesting facts about flora and fauna. Those interested in history are recommended to visit the ramparts on the Schloßbergweg.

The circular tour with a cross connection starts at Oberholz station in Großpösna. The stop is on the Leipzig - Geithain - Chemnitz railroad line (trains run every hour). The small station is run by the Großpösna Friends of the Railway Association, which organizes exhibitions several times a year. Follow Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße past the "Büffeltränke" restaurant and after the playground, turn right onto Lange Weg. Behind the railroad tracks, you will come across a memorial stone commemorating the handover of the forest by Duke Moritz of Saxony to the University of Leipzig in 1544. After the first information boards, turn right onto the Saulöcherweg and walk to the refuge. Then turn right onto the Butterweg or Oelzschauer Weg. At the second crossroads, take the Sandgrubenweg, which is a cross-connection of the nature trail. After a few meters, you will reach the forest action center, which invites you to take a short break. Back on the Butterweg, which joins the Störmthaler Weg on the right, there are boards dedicated to bird life. At the end of the Störmthaler Weg, before the railroad tracks, you will find the botanical garden on the left-hand side. This is always worth a visit. Until a few years ago, it was also run as a prestigious training institute for chemists and pharmacists. We recommend a snack in the "Büffeltränke" to round off the tour.
