General information about Lake Störmthal in Leipzig
It may be a little further away from the city, but no distance is too far for a visit to Lake Störmthal. As part of the Neuseenland, the Störmthaler See is also an artificial body of water created as a result of mining and flooding. The lake, with its area of 7.33 km², is significantly larger than its neighbors Lake Markkleeberg and Cospudener See is located in the municipality of Großpösna in the south of Leipzig.
First things first: you're not the only ones who can cool off here. Your four-legged friend can also cool off on hot days at Lake Störmthal. At the eastern end (near a viewpoint) there is a large dog beach with plenty of space and water fun for your faithful companions - perfect for a holiday with a dog.
How to get to the lake
You can easily reach Lake Störmthal by car via the A38 or the B95 if you are traveling from the south. You can then park your car either in one of the three parking lots on the Magdeborn peninsula, at the eastern end of the lake or at Kanupark Markkleeberg, from where it is not far to the northern beach area. If you want to travel from the city by public transport, you can change at Markkleeberg, where you can hop on bus 106, which runs around the entire eastern side of Lake Störmthal.
What you can experience
You will definitely need more than one day to experience everything on offer at Lake Störmthal. In the coming summer months, you can therefore confidently plan several trips to Großpösna.
There is a 24.9 km long, asphalted circular path around the lake, which you can use for hiking. However, skaters and cyclists will probably have the most fun on the trail, as the firm surface is great for rolling. However, the slight inclines along the route also provide plenty of sporting challenges.
If you're out and about with friends and are looking for a change of pace, Teambike-Leipzig can take on the journey around the lake on a so-called conference bike with seven saddles. Fun and challenging at the same time!

Water sports for everyone
Water lovers will definitely get their money's worth here. There are a total of 5 bathing spots along the shore: the first is in Störmthal in the north-eastern part of the lake. All other bathing spots are located in the south, for example on the west side of the Magdeborn peninsula and at LAGOVIDA resort, where you also have barrier-free access to the water.
If you d like to do more than just splash around, then the Grunaer Weg bathing area is the right place for you. Here you can of course also go swimming as normal, but the Surf School Leipzig also offers you the opportunity to take a stand-up paddling board on the water or windsurfing courses. In addition to the boards, you can also hire canoes and make the lake unsafe.
A unique experience awaits you at the VINETA bistro. Here you can fly over the lake with the Jetlev VINETA-Fly. How do you do it? You have a kind of rucksack on your back that sucks in water through a hose and spits it out again through 2 jets - at a rate of 100 liters per second! The power of the jets then pushes the rucksack into the air - and you with it. For €169 you can book this experience, which you ll certainly not forget for the rest of your life.
You can explore Lake Störmthal on land (via the circular route) or on the water. But the special thing is that you can do both at the same time! On a tour with the DUKW 353, a restored amphibious vehicle from 1942, you ll first explore the land around the lake and then travel across the water to the VINETA on the lake - without changing trains!

In addition to the VINETA, there is another place that is even more reminiscent of the days of lignite mining: the Mining Technology Park is located on the north-western side of the lake and is home to some historic giants from the mining era. Technology enthusiasts of all ages can learn all about the mining of lignite back then and can even admire many of the machines used at the time.
The region also has a number of buildings worth seeing for lovers of even more historic places and architecture. However, if you start your journey in the north of the lake, the peninsula in the south is a good distance away. If you need a snack halfway through your journey, the food truck No.51 will give you a warm welcome. A small sign on the bright red construction trailer reads "Peace and joy pancakes" and, true to this motto, you can enjoy excellent crêpes here. The café in the vicarage is very cute and definitely worth a detour. Here you can enjoy delicious cakes in the parlor-like dining room with its unmistakable green floor tiles or on the outdoor seating area in front of the café.

Even the kids won't miss out here. Among the experiences mentioned, there are certainly some that will also delight children.
Alternatively, you will find several playgrounds around the lake where they can romp, climb and swing. The most beautiful places can be found at the VINETA bistro or the LAGOVIDA, for example, but also at the mining technology park. There is also a playground right in the village of Störmthal, so you won't get bored on the west side of the lake either.
Our tip: You can take a child-friendly tour around Lake Störmthal on the "Schlendrian" little train. After a 3-hour tour on the blue train, you can then hire pedal boats in VW Beetle livery at the VINETA bistro to whizz across the lake with your kids.

What you should see at Lake Störmthal in Leipzig
The place that is probably most associated with Lake Störmthal is the VINETA on the lake, which is why this attraction is actually a must for every visitor. It is a floating building (at 15 meters high, it is actually the highest floating building on a German lake) that is intended to commemorate the places that had to make way for open-cast lignite mining. The "floating church" is therefore a very special location where you can even get married.
There are boat moorings on several banks where you can hop on the passenger boats. You can even get from Lake Markkleeberg along the eastern side of the lake to the VINETA bistro without a long bike ride. From there, there is a dedicated ferry that will take you to VINETA on Lake Störmthal.
An absolute highlight: the annual HIGHFIELD Festival in August. Numerous national and international music stars from the fields of indie, rock and hip-hop come together here. A cool mix and always a great event!

Lake Störmthal is the largest lake in Leipzig's New Lake District and therefore probably THE lake with the most to experience. There are busier spots, but also paths where you won't meet anyone for several kilometers and can therefore enjoy pure nature. With the floating church VINETA, the lake has an absolute highlight to offer that everyone simply has to see up close.
