The most beautiful cycle routes in and around Leipzig

The most famous cycle path in Germany is the Elbe Cycle Path. The connection between the city of Leipzig and the popular Elbe cycle path is via the lesser-known Leipzig-Elbe cycle route. The family-friendly route alternates between village and rural idylls. Wide fields and floodplains dominate the picture.

A highlight of the route is the Bergkirche Beucha, which is located directly on a heart-shaped lake and is a great place to take a break. The Dahlener Heide with its extensive meadows, forests and tranquil ponds is also very attractive. Numerous windmills, old castles and village churches worth seeing line the route, which mainly runs along country roads with little traffic. The cycle path is crossed by the Parthe-Mulde cycle route, the Neuseenland-Radroute and the Mulderadweg, which also allows you to explore various circular routes.

As the name suggests, the Obstland route takes you through the Saxon fruit country. On almost 60 kilometers you drive past wonderful orchards and experience pure idyll. A perfect detour for anyone who wants to escape the city for a few hours. The large Orchard Route consists of three small themed routes, which focus on the history of fruit growing or the spiritual buildings along the route, for example.

A good way to start the route is to begin at the Geoportal Mügeln. You ll get from Leipzig to Oschatz within a 30-minute train ride. A historic narrow-gauge railway then takes you to Mügeln. The cycle route starts here and takes you past sweet farm stores selling regional fruit and vegetables and great recipe ideas. The final stop is Leisnig an der Mulde. The train connection will take you from here back to Leipzig city center.

Now we come to the final route of our cycle paths in Leipzig and the region. The Torgische Radweg runs through the middle of the Düben Heath. The start and end points are easy to reach by train, so you can easily cycle this route in one day. If you start in Delitzsch, 67kilometres separate you from Hartenfels Castle in Torgau. However, as we all know, the journey is the reward and on this route lies the town of Bad Düben. The spa town is a meeting point for many cycle routes, such as the Mulderadweg or the Radweg Berlin-Leipzig. From Bad Düben, a visit to the Düben Heath is worthwhile, as with a bit of luck you may even come across the famous beaver here.

On the tour, you will come across a wide variety of mills, some of which can also be visited on Mill Day on Whit Monday. Once you arrive in Torgau, a visit to Hartenfels Castle is of course a must. Here you can marvel at an early Renaissance castle, which once served as the main and secondary residence of Saxon electors. Really impressive!
