Are you ready for the most magnificent castles and palaces in the Leipzig region? The region around Leipzig is known for its above-average density of manor houses, which are embedded in a uniquely beautiful natural and river landscape. Let's go to the most beautiful spots around Leipzig!

Stories of a thousand and one years

Some are still in their dormant state. Others, on the other hand, are used either as residential buildings for private individuals or vacation guests, as hotels, restaurants or museums. In the latter, you can explore Saxon history, immerse yourself in the architecture and culture of past centuries and feel the spirit of the times. Exclusive special and experience tours complement the various permanent exhibitions.

We have picked out the six most beautiful excursion destinations for castles and palaces in the Leipzig region for you:

Hartenfels Castle and its brown bears

It blends picturesquely into the Torgau townscape: Hartenfels Castle. Built in the 16th century on the foundations of a castle, the splendor of this period can still be felt within the walls and in the magnificent castle courtyard. The spiral staircase - also known as the Great Spiral Stone - and the majestic Castle Chapel are particularly impressive.

What can you experience here?

Many sightseeing options, high-quality exhibitions or special guided tours convey the history of Hartenfels Castle in a very special way. A multimedia exhibition also provides an insight into everyday life at the Torgau court.

Our tip: A view from the vantage point on the Hausmannsturm and a visit to the Castle Café round off your visit perfectly. You can find out about all the other experiences here.

Saxony's most beautiful knight's castle

Saxony's most beautiful knight's castle, the Kriebstein Castle. Located in the middle of the Dresden-Chemnitz-Leipzig city triangle, it is a very popular excursion destination. On the banks of the river Zschopau - perched on a steep rock - the castle awaits you with its monumental residential tower and the castle chapel with valuable paintings from around 1410. Not only can you marvel at the Kriebsteinzimmer here, but you can also see furnished interior rooms of the von Arnim family . Events can also be held, as the castle has various function rooms for weddings, family and company celebrations.

A highlight for little explorers: The interactive chase. A playful exploration tour through the medieval walls, where the secrets of the knight's castle must be uncovered. All other activities for young and old can be found here.

Attention! Due to a lack of staff, the castle tavern is closed until further notice.

The baroque castle in Delitzsch

The Delitzsch Castle has a long history: As early as 1389, Margrave Wilhelm I of Meissen had a medieval moated castle built, whose tower still towers over the baroque castle today. In the meantime, the castle was redesigned into a Renaissance castle from 1535. The many phases of construction ended with the final extension and conversion in 1689, allowing the beautiful Baroque castle to slip into its current guise.

The exterior architectural style based on the French model, together with the magnificent interior, is an absolute eye-catcher. The castle is also one of the oldest in north-west Saxony and boasts  a lovingly landscaped baroque garden.

Today, it is a cultural monument of supra-regional importance. It also houses a museum, the Tourist Information Office of the town of Delitzsch, a State Office and the Castle Cellar. For example, the museum shows the history of the castle and town as well as the former life of the dowager duchesses of Saxe-Merseburg in the Delitzsch ladies' castle in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Numerous events also take place in the castle: There are exciting lectures, family tours and great concerts. The latter are particularly inviting during the Advent season - the concerts are given by the Kreismusikschule, which is also based here.

What else is there to experience? You can find out here.

Family day at Gnandstein Castle

For more than 800 years, the best-preserved Romanesque fortifications in Saxony, Gnandstein Castle, has shaped the district of the same name in the town of Frohburg. Situated on a rock visible from afar, equipped with an imposing shield wall, battlements and a striking tower, it looks like a castle from a picture book. In addition to historical living quarters with Baroque to Classicist furnishings, the late Gothic chapel with three ornate altars from the16th century is one of the castle's highlights.

What can you experience here

You can conquer the medieval complex via guided castle tours, a variety of project days with participation stations and activity programs. This little journey through time is always an impressive experience, especially for children. Swords can be forged, fenced or even shot with a crossbow at interactive game stations. The fact is: Gnandstein Castle offers great offers for little explorers and discoverers, to explore the historic walls in more detail.

You can find more experiences for your visit to Gnandstein Castle here.

Escape stories at Colditz Castle

Colditz Castle with its white gables should not be missing from an article entitled "The most magnificent castles and palaces in the Leipzig region". As a landmark and one of the most beautiful Central German architectural monuments of the 16th century, Colditz Castle towers high on the rock above the town of the same name.

The castle was originally built during the Renaissance as a residence and hunting lodge of the Saxon electors. It gained worldwide fame as a result of the spectacular escape activities of Allied officers during the Second World War. The "Escape Museum" takes a closer look at the imaginative escape attempts, including self-made escape tools.

What can you experience here?

Audio stations and historical film material bring together the stories and exhibits of the modern exhibition in an impressive way. Since April 2024, it has also been possible to discover the castle via tablet - in the form of an interactive treasure hunt! With the HistoPad, you can go on a journey of discovery through the sacred walls alone or together and search for the seven hidden objects that were necessary for an escape back then.

Now the only question is - will you really succeed in escaping from Colditz Castle?

Virtual reality at Rochlitz Castle

The 1,000-year-old Rochlitz Castle with its two mighty towers is located on the Zwickauer Mulde. Here, too, you can go back to the historic knightly era: the thick walls house a chapel with an impressive cross vault. You can also marvel at a black kitchen with a huge stove and functioning chimney. There are also dungeons, a torture chamber, a magnificently restored prince's house and everything about the history of the castle complex including emperors, kings and princes.

What can you experience here?

The accompanying exhibition naturally focuses on the Middle Ages. But the Reformation - introduced at the time by Duchess Elisabeth of Rochlitz despite enormous resistance - is also addressed. The role of women in the Reformation is explained in an exciting way.

Our two best tips: On a castle tour you can discover the mysterious plaster carvings. Many years ago, these were scratched into the walls by little princes. They provide a lasting insight into their lives back then. Afterwards, you can travel to different eras in the captain's room with VR glasses or use the interactive game stations, where you can stab with a lance and fence with a sabre. It doesn't get any more knightly than this!

You can find even more hands-on activities for your trip to Rochlitz Castle here.

What can you experience here

Together with the little fat tower"Frieder Berg" interested children can embark on a journey through time in a modern and family-friendly exhibition. At the touch of a button, he tells exciting stories and reveals many a castle secret. Instead of a dusty museum, you can expect exhibits to touch and try out. The castle also has many other cool experiences in store for younger visitors! During an interactive treasure hunt with an escape room, the spirit of discovery meets detective skills.
