Delicious Leipzig - Traditional cuisine

If you want to eat traditionally in Leipzig, you will find what you are looking for in many corners and alleyways. A large number of restaurants offer traditional German, Saxon, Bavarian or Bohemian cuisine in a rustic ambience. But it is precisely this variety (we admit: we really appreciate it!) that makes it so difficult to decide. So today we have an article for you that highlights great Leipzig restaurants with home-style cooking that you can take your family, friends and acquaintances to.

Auerbach's cellar

The Auerbachs Keller welcomes you to the famous Mädlerpassage. It is the second oldest and most famous restaurant in Leipzig. It owes this fame to one person in particular (but not only): Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The restaurant has been attracting visitors since 1530 and is even considered one of the five most famous restaurants in the world in some studies. The cellar itself is divided into two areas. On the one hand, there are the four historic wine taverns: the Fasskeller, the Lutherzimmer, the Goethezimmer and the Alt-Leipzig. And opposite is the Great Cellar, which was built in 1912 with the Mädlerpassage exhibition center. If you want to visit the historic cellar, which is adorned with bronze figures of Mephisto and Faust at the entrance, you should prepare yourself for hearty home cooking. The soups, salads, classics from the pan, typical Saxon dishes, schnitzels, steaks and even vegan or vegetarian options are extremely tasty. The Auerbachs Keller was already one of the city's most popular wine taverns in the 16th century. But see for yourself.

In the Mädlerpassage above the cellar, you will also find the Mephisto Bar, which offers home-baked goods and coffee specialties during the day and cocktails and live music in the evening.

Barthels Hof Inn

You can get to know and love classic specialties and delicious seasonal dishes at Barthels Hof. The family-run inn run by the Grahl family places particular value and attention on high-quality food and special hospitality. And that 365 days a year!

For more than 500 years now, the inn has been serving Saxon cuisine. Selected partners from the region provide the ingredients for the preparation of the dishes, with new recipes being created and served time and again to suit the current season. Would you like to try Leipzig specialties directly on site? No problem, because the Leipzig beef roulade, the traditional "Leipziger Lerche" pastry and the top-fermented beer - the Gose - are also on offer here!

The location of the baroque Barthels Hof in the immediate vicinity of the Leipzig market is unbeatable. While the inn itself is located in one of the city's most popular thoroughfares, it is also just a few minutes' walk from the Barfußgässchen, the Thomaskirche or the Brühl. In spring and summer, the large outdoor seating area makes it particularly worthwhile to linger. Here you can enjoy hours of sunshine, the historic atmosphere and homemade punch. But even in fall and winter, the through courtyard protects you from rain and snowfall.</p

The Weinstock restaurant in the heart of Leipzig is located directly on the market square and is also just a stone's throw from Barthels Hof. 90 indoor seats, an exclusive wine cellar with additional seating and a fantastic summer terrace create a pleasant atmosphere, while carefully selected furnishings, stylishly laid tables and attentive service ensure an excellent stay.

While a hefty business lunch and a look at the menu of the day are worthwhile at lunchtime, in the evening you can even listen to the sounds of the in-house piano while enjoying cream soup, fillet of beef, Leipziger Allerlei or tarte flambée A constantly changing range of fresh seasonal cuisine makes a visit a real experience, even for Leipzig locals. And what rounds off a meal at Weinstock perfectly? Of course, the available selection of exquisite wines.

The Weinstock is one of the best culinary addresses in the city and impresses with its service, quality and unbeatable location.

Ratskeller

Just like the other restaurants in this series, the Ratskeller looks back on a past steeped in tradition. It was built in 1904 on the foundations of the old Pleißenburg and opened in the New Town Hall. The former Ratsweinkeller has seven function rooms with a total of 700 seats. Although the vaults of the Ratskeller are so huge, guests still have a very cozy atmosphere. The tables are perfectly prepared for you and the service is attentive, friendly and professional.

Since the late 1990s, the Ratskeller has been serving Gutbürgerlich-Sächsische cuisine. Regional and seasonal ingredients form the basis for national and international dishes. And as you eat with your eyes, the food in the Ratskeller is also beautifully presented. In addition to the well-known classics, there is everything your heart desires, from "From hand to mouth" to "Eat like at home" and "From pot and pan". What are these terms all about? The best way to find out is to visit yourself ;)

And even better: in the Ratskeller you can also be "meatlessly happy". The numerous specials, which you can also view in advance on the website, are also worthwhile.</p

Bavarian train station

In the Bayerischer Bahnhof combines so much: A restaurant with beer garden, an event venue of unforgettable gastronomic and culinary experiences as well as a brewery as the home of a Leipzig original - the beer specialty Gose. The Bayerischer Bahnhof offers a special setting for every occasion and is bursting with individuality. The location alone is a real eye-catcher, but the individual rooms inside the oldest terminus station in the world are also highly individual. Each guest room is uniquely designed and invites you on a short journey of discovery into the eventful past of this building.

In terms of cuisine, the Bayerischer Bahnhof impresses with traditional, varied and seasonal delicacies. The German cuisine with Saxon and Bavarian accents will whet your appetite. From soups and roast suckling pig to delicious potato bread or raspberry cheesecake on warm cherry ragout - the menu has a lot to offer.

And what else should you try? Definitely the top-fermented, slightly sparkling and even vitamin-rich gose, of course! The ultra-modern microbrewery in the Bayerischer Bahnhof has brought it back to Leipzig.</p

To the coffee tree

Finally open to the public again since March 2025: the traditional restaurant Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. It is the oldest coffee house in Leipzig and is even considered one of the oldest continuously operating coffee houses in the whole of Europe. Coffee has been served here since 1711. Over the centuries, the establishment has been a popular meeting place for numerous personalities such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Schumann, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Napoleon - a living testimony to Leipzig's hospitality.

On three floors, the Coffe Baum today offers a combination of café, restaurant and museum.<nbsp;Guests can enjoy regional specialties in stylishly restored rooms such as the Kaisersaal, the Schumann Room or the Wiener Café - including Leipziger Allerlei, beef roulade or the typical Gose beer.

Also recommended: a visit to the exhibition of the City History Museum on the upper floor, which highlights the Saxon coffee culture and the history of the building in 16 historic rooms.
