Leipzig Jazz Days

Over 40 years of jazz festival culture

The international Leipzig Jazz Days are among the oldest and most renowned jazz festivals in Germany. In 2016, they celebrated their 40th anniversary. Every year in autumn, the Jazzclub Leipzig presents well over 100 musicians for an entire week – big names and pioneers of jazz, as well as innovative newcomers. Performances take place in the opera and theatre, in the historic Kongresshalle by the zoo, in churches, numerous scene clubs, and in the oldest cinema auditorium in the city, the UT Connewitz.

With self-initiated projects, commissioned compositions, and above all a thematic framework, the festival reflects the spirit of the times in jazz: “Between Mahler and Miles”, “Sound of Heimat”, or “Cinematic Jazz” were the themes in previous years. The close connection to the Polish jazz scene also sets the Leipzig Jazz Days apart from many other festivals. With the traditional “Jazz for Children”, the festival also offers a cultural highlight for the whole family.

Since 1991, the euro-scene (International Dance and Theater Festival) has spent six days in early November exploring current social issues – artistic, provocative and inspiring. Each year, the festival presents twelve to fourteen international productions from the fields of dance, theatre and performance, which are challenging both in form and content.

Under the artistic direction of Christian Watty, the programme is aimed at a broad audience. Renowned artists, new discoveries from the young scene, as well as world premieres and German premieres, which are often created in co‑production with regional and international partners, are a firm part of the festival. The goal is bold, socio‑politically relevant and emotionally moving productions that inspire dialogue. The euro‑scene also invites you to take part in workshops, film screenings and discussion formats.
