Whether you are new to Leipzig and want to bring your family something typical of your new place of residence or are still looking for a suitable Christmas gift, the search for the perfect Leipzig souvenir is not always easy. We took a look around for you and discovered some original ideas. By the way: most of the Leipzig souvenirs are also available to buy online. Even if you live far away, you can bring a piece of Leipzig home with you.

Leipzig delicacies

Souvenirs aren't really your thing and you don't want to buy something that will probably end up gathering dust on the shelf? Then these Leipzig delicacies are definitely something for you!

You can try one of the most famous specialties, the Leipzig Lark, in a very classic way. From 1876, the hunting of larks (more precisely the skylark, a songbird and a popular delicacy at the time) was banned and could no longer be served. Leipzig bakers came up with a remedy and invented pastries made from shortcrust pastry and strawberry jam or marzipan. The criss-crossing strips of dough on the pastries are still reminiscent of the stuffed, tied-up songbirds. You can enjoy this specialty at Gasthaus Barthels Hof or Kaffeehaus Riquet, for example. You can also order them online. For example at Bäckerei Kleinert or at Café Kandler.

The Bachtaler has also become an integral part of Leipzig. The Café Kandler has created this sweet temptation from a envelope door shell with cream-butter-ganache cream especially for the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. When you bite into the Bachtaler, you will be surprised by a coffee bean covered in hazelnut shortcrust pastry in the middle.

Typical Leipzig drinks

As a beer lover & beer lover, you should definitely try Leipziger Gose. Gose is a top-fermented beer that tastes rather sour. Its special ingredients, cooking salt and coriander, make it a real specialty. The original Gose is now available in over 100 pubs and online, e.g. in the Gasthaus & Gosebrauerei Bayerischer Bahnhof, in the Gosenschenke "Ohne Bedenken" or in the Biergarten am Hafen Pier 1.

In the high-proof section, you will find the Leipziger Allasch, a genuine cumin liqueur. You can drink it ice cold after a meal or mixed with Gose as a "Gose umbrella". At Horns Erben, in the Mephistobar in Auerbachs Keller or in Biergarten am Hafen Pier 1 you should find what you are looking for. You can also find the good stuff online, for example at Wilhelm Horn.

Finally, the Leipziger Lerche Liqueur from the Leipziger Spirituosen Manufaktur adds a sweet and fruity finish to our range of drinks tips. The taste of the pastry liqueur is based on the traditional Leipzig cult pastry and impresses with its aromatic variety of marzipan, apricot, sour cherry and, of course, pastry ;)

Of course, you can also discover a few more regional specialties that Leipzig would be unthinkable without.

Historical Leipzig Calendar

Perfect for the turn of the year, the "Historical Leipzig Calendar" invites you on a walk through old Leipzig between 1940 and 1950. By the end of the 1940s, the city had been cleared of war debris, buildings had been repaired and some had been repurposed. For example, the former Gesellschaftshaus am Zoo became a cultural center and the Großkeglerheim in Elsterstraße became a hotel. The thirteen stylish motifs are depicted in black and white.

You can purchase the calendar for 21.90 euros from the Tourist Information, in various bookshops and in many Leipzig Konsum branches.
