Save on your journey: How can I get to Leipzig cheaply?
Cost-effective and above all spontaneous, you can get to Leipzig with a carpool. You book the ride online. After booking, you will receive your driver's contact details and can arrange a meeting point. At the end of the journey, you contribute petrol money. The driver sets the price. Find out in advance who you are going with and take a look at their profiles. A tip for girls: there are also rides by women for women. The big advantage of carpooling? The spontaneity! You can often find a seat in the car for the same day and drive to Leipzig a few hours later.
If you want to plan your trip for the longer term, then the various long-distance bus providers are the right choice for you. The bus journeys are cheap and comfortable, and you even have WIFI on board. Booking early pays off! A few weeks before departure, trips are often much cheaper than a few days before departure. You can get a bargain for less than 30 euros. Sometimes you are lucky and get one of the Deutsche Bahn tickets for the same price.
Save on the hotel: where can I sleep cheaply?
Regardless of whether you take a carpool or a Flixbus, you will usually arrive at the main station in Leipzig. Before you explore the city, you will probably want to drop off your luggage first. The a&o Hostel Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is just a few minutes' walk from the station. Depending on how early you book, a bed in a room for eight in the accommodation close to the city center will cost you from 16 euros per night. Bed linen is included and a contact person is available 24/7 at reception. You can freshen up in the private bathroom, which you only share with guests in your room. And: In the morning, you can fortify yourself for the day ahead with an all-you-can-eat breakfast for ten euros.
Located in the trendy Plagwitz district, the Hostel & Garten Eden is not quite as central. All rooms are lovingly themed: There is definitely no trace of bunk bed tristesse here. Shared kitchen and bathrooms are also available. In the eight-bed room you stay from 22 euros per night. After a long day of sightseeing, you can relax in the hotel's own garden.
Or for the ultimate savers among you: You can book a night in a 10-bed room at the Sleepy Lion Hostel from 12 euros. There you can sizzle up a few sausages or a tasty grilled cheese at the barbecue area with the other hostel residents and make some nice friends to explore Leipzig together.

How do I get around Leipzig economically?
We have good news for you! The center of Leipzig is very compact and you can discover most of the sights on foot. If you want to explore other parts of the city, the hip Plagwitz or the lively Südvorstadt, we have a tip for you: The Leipzig Card! The card is available for one (9.90 euros) or three days (24.90 euros). In addition to many other benefits, you can travel for free on all lines in fare zone 110 of the Central German Transport Association. If you want to discover not only the city, but also the diverse Leipzig region, we recommend the Leipzig Regio Card, which, in addition to numerous discounts, also gives you free travel on public transport in the region in the area of the Central German Transport Association (MDV) including on the MS Cospuden across Lake Cospuden! The card lightens your wallet for one day for 26 euros, for three days for 56 euros.
When the weather is nice, the best way to get to know Leipzig is on a bike. At Nextbike, you can rent a bike and return it at many stations throughout the city. Billing takes place every 15 minutes. Every quarter of an hour costs 1 euro. If you are planning a long tour, rent the bike for 24 hours and pay just 15 euros. Where can I eat and drink for little money?
Can't eat in an expensive restaurant every day? No problem. Most hostels give you access to a communal kitchen. This means you can shop at the supermarket and prepare your favorite meal yourself at a reasonable price. Still missing an ingredient? Try Food Sharing. The platform aims to ensure that no more food is thrown away. You can meet up with like-minded people at designated hotspots and swap or share food.
If you don't want to cook yourself, there are a number of affordable restaurants in Leipzig. Inexpensive Mexican delicacies are served at Acapulco. A few meters further on, directly on Südplatz, you can enjoy delicious (vegan) burgers at Big B. In the west of Leipzig, there are also some budget-friendly and creative treats to discover along Karl-Heine-Straße. At Don Kichot, for example, you can get hot baked potatoes with unusual toppings that will satisfy even two people. The house specialty is the baked potato Kumpir, which we can highly recommend!

What is there to see for savers?
You can spend the money you've saved on food on the real part, the sightseeing. But there's good news here too! You can experience many of the sights for free. The architecture of the Thomaskirche or the flair of the Nikolaikirche won't cost you a penny. And the city of Leipzig also has great news for museum enthusiasts since January 1, 2024: the permanent exhibitions of the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts (as well as the partner museums for ethnology and musical instruments), the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum (Museum im Alten Rathaus, Kindermuseum and Schillerhaus) and the Museum der bildenden Künste can now be visited for free! Please note: This applies only to the museums' permanent exhibitions. The special exhibitions are not affected. And another tip: the Gallery of Contemporary Art also offers free admission to its entire premises every Wednesday.
Free admission is also available to the Grieg-Begegnungsstätte Leipzig e.V. The association has been working for many years to promote the memory of the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and his work in Leipzig. Here you can visit an exciting exhibition on Grieg's life and see a historic concert hall from around 1900. Readings, lectures and workshops are also on offer.
With the Leipzig Card, you can also save big on culture! You pay up to 50% less at museums, cultural institutions and events. You can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over Leipzig from the viewing platform of the City Tower. A trip to the 29th floor costs you 5 euros.
To discover historic Leipzig, you can, for example, follow the Leipzig Music Trail and go on a journey of discovery through the long tradition of music in Leipzig. Alternatively, the free app "ZEITFENSTER. Friedliche Revolution Leipzig" offers a creative way to move through the city via augmented reality on historical paths from 1989 by merging historical photographs with the current camera section.

Store and still save: the best flea markets in Leipzig
When you've finished sightseeing, round off your Leipzig trip with a shopping tour. With a bit of luck, you can find a unique souvenir of your visit to Leipzig by browsing through the city's numerous flea markets. During the summer, the Feinkost flea market takes place on the Feinkost area every first Saturday of the month. If your trip to Leipzig falls on the last weekend of the month, don't miss the big flea market at the agra. It is one of the largest flea markets in Germany. But be careful! One or two visitors have forgotten the time between clothes and antiques on the gigantic site. Night owls we can also recommend the night flea market which takes place here separately on a few dates each year. The Kiezflohmarkt in Westwerk Leipzig is also worth a visit. Every two weeks on Sundays, you can go shopping in the creative and trendy Plagwitz district. And: Before your visit, find out whether Westbesuch is on: at the big street festival at the Bürgerbahnhof in Plagwitz there are always some stalls where you can get great bargains.
